NEW DELHI: Cockroach Janata Party on Tuesday withdrew its call for a march on September 5 after Supreme Court, on the Centre’s request, quashed all FIRs registered across the country against students who participated in the NEET protests.“I want to state that in view of the positive assurances of the government of India and the judicial sanctity bestowed upon them today, and in view of the order being passed by this court, the CJP deems it appropriate to withdraw the call for the march on September 5 and looks forward to compliance with today’s order,” CJP co-convener Sourav Das said during a hearing in the Supreme Court.Chief Justice of India Surya Kant appreciated the CJP’s decision, observing that disputes could be resolved if both sides acted in good faith.“If both sides show good faith, then all issues can be resolved one by one. There is nothing in the world which is too complicated that it cannot be discussed with an open mind,” the CJI said.This comes after Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Centre and Delhi Police, informed the apex court that the Centre remains committed to fulfilling all three assurances given to the leadership of CJP during the meeting between the Centre and the party.
What were the three assurances
The first assurance was that the Centre would not pursue FIRs registered between July 20 and July 25.The second assurance was that no fresh FIRs would be registered in connection with the matter.The third assurance was that the government would pay compensation to students who died by suicide allegedly in connection with the NEET paper leak.“Centre is committed to honour the assurance given to the CJP leaders to provide compensation to the families of students who died by suicide after NEET exam cancellation; however, 3 months needed to work out the modalities,” Mehta told SC.“As of now, we are committed to fulfilling all three assurances,” he added.Earlier on Monday, Centre moved the apex court seeking to quash FIR’s registered against the student protesters with alleged violence during protests over the NEET paper leak in Delhi and other states.Solicitor general Tushar Mehta mentioned the plea before a bench headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant on Monday, seeking the court’s intervention in the matter.The Centre has urged the Supreme Court to exercise its extraordinary powers under Article 142 of the Constitution to quash the FIRs registered against the protesting students.Also read: ‘Keeping future of students in mind’: Nadda after quashing of FIRs against NEET protesters.
Why CJP had called for Sept 5 march
CJP had called for a protest march in Delhi on September 5, Teachers’ Day. It had accused the Centre of failing to honour the promises made on July 25 to persuade the group to withdraw its 36-day agitation against irregularities in exams and the NEET paper leak.

According to the CJP, the march was to be led by families of students who committed suicide following the cancellation of the NEET exam and the subsequent re-test, as well as those who were allegedly subjected to police excesses during the July agitation.
